Let's Play Donkey Kong Country - Part 6: Bumble in the Jungle
In the second half of the forest world, we find...not much in the way of forest levels, actually. We start this episode off with 3-4, Temple Tempest, the other temple level of the game. It still has the millstones, but now instead of going back and forth, they actually start chasing you once you go past them. You don't get Winky this time either, though you can find Expresso the ostrich in a bonus room. She can flap her wings to glide downward and, with her long legs, just run right past certain enemies, though I never did figure out which ones. You'd think it would be anything too low to the ground to touch her body, but apparently not. 3-5, Orang-utan Gang, brings us back to the jungle. It's sunset this time, and we have a new enemy to deal with: Manky Kong, who throws barrels at you. This level has Expresso as well, and more importantly, it has the most bonuses of any level in the game, with a total of 5. At least one of them is in a pretty obscure and hard-to-find location, too...that's one thing I don't like about the first Donkey Kong Country is how well-hidden some of the bonus rooms are. (Well, if "well" means "stupidly and annoyingly"...) 3-6, Clam City, is another underwater level. It has lots and lots of clams, and that's about all there is to say about it. The boss stage of Vine Valley, Bumble B Rumble, pits the Kongs against Queen B., one of the two bosses in the game that don't have an upgraded, palette-swapped version. Queen B. is, well, a giant bee that flies around the outside of the arena, while barrels appear in the room. When hit, she turns red and zoome up and down until she goes back to yellow. It's simple enough.
And with that, we've reached the halfway point of the game. There are only six worlds in all, and three of them are finished. We've made good progress.
