Well, it's finally time...time to conquer the fortress stages of Mega Man X6! It might not be easy, either...actually, I personally don't think the fortress stages in X6—including the bosses—are any worse than those in previous games, but they do have a nasty reputation. This time, the fortress takes the form of a laboratory...Gate's Laboratory. Hey, the Mavericks are investigators in this game, so why can't the fortress be a laboratory?

Gate's Laboratory 1 is oddly short, especially for a fortress stage, but it has its share of dangers. Many of the obstacles are ones recognizable from previous stages. Lasers, wolves, ice...there's even an area where you have to escape rising fire *cough* I mean, uh, MAGMA, yeah, that's it, magma. This is, after all, the place where the Nightmare was born. On the other hand, the fortresses don't really have any Nightmare effects, at least not the same way the main eight stages do. There aren't any hidden goodies here either. You just have to fight your way through to the end...and make sure you have the right armor and Parts. You might be in trouble if you don't.

The boss of this stage is kind of interesting. I don't know what its official name is, but I've heard "Twin Nightmare Cells" and "Nightmare Mother". It consists of two large blobs of...material (about the size of Blaze Heatnix's red donut minibosses) with metal eye-like orbs in the middle that move around the arena and stop to perform various attacks. Each cell can use one of four possible attacks (that are kind of a pain to dodge, I must say). They'll both do one simultaneously (might not be the same), until you kill off one of the cells by hitting its "eye" when it isn't fully embedded in the cell. I usually use a combination of the charged Z-Saber and the charged Metal Anchor.

After beating the Nightmare Mother, you don't get any new weapons (obviously), but you do get another cutscene. What's going to happen to Gate...? Let's find out in the next installment, shall we?
