The Unknown items are a very interesting addition and relate themselves very well to the later trials Samus encounters. I also read that this was included as an homage to Metroid's sibling title at the time of the NES, Kid Icarus due to the similarity of retrieving 3 extremely powerful armaments, but not being able to use them until the very end.
The Power Grip is an odd addition, since it seems that Samus should be capable of grabbing onto ledges with minor trouble. Introduced via Super Smash Bros. 64, then appearing in a full title, Metroid Fusion and later again in Other M, all those instances didn't suggest Samus needed some special upgrade to latch onto ledges.
There are now two variants of the fragile blocks, one which is the normal one where it crumbles the moment Samus makes contact, and another that crumbles more gradually, giving her more time to react.
Ice Beam is always a sight of comfort in these enemy infested hallways.
