MiSTer FPGA - Ghostbusters [1cc] / Sega Master System
First Halloween game today is Ghostbusters for Sega Master System. This is the best version I've played, and it was actually developed by Compile! They also did the Genesis version, which is a completely different game with the same name. This version was originally on computers, developed by David Crane and published by Activision. Compile made some significant changes to this version and added a bit more depth to the game with multiple game modes. If you want to check out other versions of this game on MiSTer, there is the original on C64, and a NES port as well. IMO they are not nearly as fun as this Master System version, however.
Oddly, what's printed in the manual does not match up very well with the actuality of how the game plays out. I found myself confused by what was going on after reading the manual, and equally odd is that half the items in the store appear to be utterly useless. Knowing what to buy is half of the battle in this one. Check the beginning of the gameplay section to see what I picked. The repeating theme song can get a bit monotonous after hearing it loop 10+ times, but that doesn't stop the game from being a fun playthrough once you figure out what you're doing. The karaoke-style sing-a-long on the title screen is a nice touch, and the rendition of the theme song is very well done, besides a couple small sections where the tones have a siren-like sound.
I tried probably 10 times before I was able to complete the game. I kept getting shut down at the stairwell section (second to last area), which IMO is the most difficult part of this game. This video is both the first time I got past that stair section and also my first time beating the game. The boss fight was relatively easy once I realized that I just needed to stand on the sides and stay out of the middle area. The continue system in this game is rather unique in that they give you a password to use as a bank account number and carry your money over, if you have over $10,000 saved when you die. This is the only way to get the fastest vehicle in the game, but it doesn't really matter since the cheaper cars can still get you through the game just fine.
If you want to start the game with $50,000, you can use this code I got from one of my earlier failed attempts: 8239319443
