The next Tera Raid Event happening is Empoleon with the Ice Tera Type in the 7 Star Tera Raid Battles, making it the first Generation 4 Starter Pokémon to be in the Tera Raid Events. Like with the Blaziken event in the last few weeks, next wekk will have the Blissey event happening alongside the Empoleon Tera Raid Event to grind Tera Shards.
Empoleon is a very tricky opponent, while it has the Ice Tera Type, it has its Hidden Ability of Competitive, which means if you try to lower its stats, it will get a Special Attack boost, making it even more harder to take down. Its moves are Surf, Flash Cannon, Ice Beam, and Grass Knot, and its extra moves are Snowscape, Blizzard, and Iron Defense. Empoleon does start off the fight with Snowscape and Blizzard, and it puts up a shield when it has 80% HP or if there is 80% time remaining, and at 80% HP and at 50% time, Empoleon will reset your stats, and it resets its stats at 50% HP, and at 65% HP is when it uses Iron Defense.
This is a hard opponent to counter because of Competitive, but I have prepared one Pokémon for this one, my original plan was to use Metagross and use Skill Swap to give Light Metal to Empoleon, set up with Hone Claws and use Meteor Mash, until I found out Metagross cannot learn Skill Swap. I then decided to go with Bronzong as it can learn Skill Swap, and the strategy is to use Iron Defense and Body Press and it has a Fighting Tera Type, and I gave it Sunny Day to not only remove the snow to get rid of Empoleon's 50% Defense boost, but also to weaken Surf.
To list other possible counters, Gallade is a solid option, as it can use Sacred Sword to get past the Defense boost from Iron Defense, it can also learn Skill Swap, and it can use Mystical Fire to weaken Empoleon's Special Attack. I have seen some Koraidon users, and while it can set up with sun with Orichalcum Pulse, the downside is Koraidon is weak to Empoleon's opening Blizzard, making it not the best to use for this one.
There are some solid support options, you will moves like Skill Swap to get past Empoleon's Competitive, and to list a few, Blissey, Jirachi, Mismagius, Uxie, Cresselia, Reuniclus, Polteageist, and Tinkaton are some of the options that can use Skill Swap, there is Simple Beam which Grumpig and Golduck can get, and they can use some good support options, Golduck can use Clear Smog to remove the Defense boost, and it can use Screech to weaken Empoleon's Defense, while Grumpig can get Snarl, Light Screen, and Mud-Slap to help out, and both can get Skill Swap.
Solo options are very difficult, while it does like Ceruledge and Skeledirge, the downside is they are weak to Water-type moves, but they can set up Sunny Day and get in some damage, but it can be very hard. There is Magearna for its Ability Soul-Heart, which boosts Magearna's Special Attack any time an ally faints, but make sure you don't get an Intimidate ally like Arcanine, Staraptor, or Tauros, or any ally that has a move that reduces Empoleon's stats.
Empoleon does come with some good attacks, Surf, Ice Beam, Flash Cannon, and Grass Knot, all four of these moves require TM, as does Snowscape, Blizzard, and Iron Defense. Empoleon can learn Aqua Jet and Hydro Pump for some decent level up moves, and for TM options, it can get Mud-Slap, Agility, Chilling Water, Air Slash, Stealth Rock, Ice Spinner, Helping Hand, Water Pledge, Hydro Cannon, Steel Beam, Roar, Haze, Vacuum Wave, Weather Ball, Flip Turn, Triple Axel, Feather Dance, and Metal Sound, and it can get Egg Moves like Yawn and Roost.
As with the Ice Tera Type, it is bad on Empoleon, Ice is the worse defensive type, and Empoleon is not a fast Pokémon, if you want to use it, change it to Water or Steel if you want to use it for Tera Raid Battles, as Empoleon does get some good options like Chilling Water, Metal Sound, and Mud-Slap, and its main move can be Surf or Flash Cannon depending on its Tera Type. If you want to use it for online battles, it will want a defensive Tera Type like Flying to give it a resistance to Fighting and an immunity Ground, but it does come at the downside of keeping of its Electric weakness, Ground can be a good Tera Type to gain an immunity to Electric-type moves, or Fairy which is a great defensive Tera Type on any defensive Pokémon, Ghost is a solid alternative, or it can go with Water which is a decent Tera Type defensively, which also powering up moves like Surf or Hydro Pump. Grass can be a good one for immunity to powder moves and can power up Grass Knot, but other than that, at least we got our first Gen 4 Starter in the Tera Raid Events.
