I am playing through Classic Mode with Bowser in this video, and even though he is displayed before Peach on the roster for Super Smash Bros. Melee, he is displayed after Peach on this game's roster, likely because in the E3 Trailer for Melee, Bowser was shown after Peach. How I do this is that I randomize a list to decide my next few characters, the playlist will display the fighters in order of how they are displayed on the roster. Bowser's Classic Mode route is The Red One, Every Red One!, and his opponents are red characters, which is likely a reference to his rivalry with Mario.
To unlock Bowser, there are many different ways, and one of them is through Vs. Matches, where Bowser is the 3rd character to be unlocked, and he is the 1st character unlocked by completing Classic Mode with Donkey Kong.
In Round 1, you fight against four Mii Fighters, two Mii Brawlers, a Mii Swordfighter, and a Mii Gunner, all of them wear Mario's Cap, and the stage is StreetPass Quest, or Find Mii. In Round 2, you fight against Ken, and the stage is Suzaku Castle, then in Round 3, you fight Samus on Norfair, in Round 4, you fight against Giant Charizard and Giant Incineroar, the stage is Pokémon Stadium 2, and items do not spawn in that fight. In Round 5, your opponent is Diddy Kong, and the stage is Kongo Jungle. In Round 6, you fight against Rathalos, and in roster order, Bowser is the first character to fight a boss that is not the last opponent.
Next is the Bonus Stage, and the final opponent on Bowser's Classic Mode route is Mario, and he is fought on New Donk City Hall on Omega Form, and after beating Mario, you then have to fight Metal Mario, and the Metal Battle theme plays when you fight Metal Mario.
After beating Metal Mario, that is Classic Mode done, and the music for the credits is King Bowser - Super Mario Bros. 3, and you then earn the Fighter Spirit for Bowser after completing Classic Mode with him for the first time, and there are other Spirits for Bowser, like Dry Bowser, Paper Bowser, Baby Bowser, and Fury Bowser.
Even though Bowser's opponents are characters that use red for their default costumes, he doesn't fight against Ness, King Dedede, Villager, or Shulk, who use red costumes, and if DLC characters count, Piranha Plant, Terry, and Sora do not appear.
