What If Astonishing X-Men closes Volume 8. Jean does not die in the event that separates her from the Phoenix, thus it's Jean they rescue from Ord, and who's prophesied to destroy Breakworld. Most of the team welcome her back, but some, including Emma, are wary due to how many times she's turned evil, and that Ord's world will stop at nothing to destroy her. It's also revealed Emma is working with Xavier's evil twin sister Cassandra, who wants to use Phoenix to escape from the prison holding her physical form. They track down the three women embodying the Phoenix and transfer their powers into Emma, turning her into the Phoenix and destroying Ord and Breakworld. Jean senses the world's destruction and the presence of the Pheonix, and the X-Men run outside to see Emma. She kills McCoy, before Jean uses her abilities to try to separate Emma from Phoenix. She's knocked back and SWORD shows up to contain the situation. Scott stops them from killing her, and, as Scott proclaims his love for Emma, Jean uses the distraction to separate Emma from Cassandra's influence. They immediately rejoin, but Emma finds the strength to keep her at bay just long enough for Kitty to rip her heart out. Unfortunately, Kitty is killed in the following Phoenix blast. The Phoenix is contained by SHIELD, Logan trains new recruits, and Cassandra's mind is shown to still exist. Next, during the time the Danger Room gained sapience and became a villain, Ultron intercepts a signal its broadcasting, and meets it right after it kills the present team, finishing the job by killing the mutant children, knocking Xavier out with the psychic trauma. The two see the potential in union, thus they share their programming, that they use to kill the remaining X-Men. The Mega-Sentinel arrives with Xavier, whom Danger taunts, before Ultron kills him too. And with all threats to their existence gone, the three fly to conquer the universe. I never followed the original stories, but these were interesting. I like the first best, but the second is exciting and a good volume closer. Though it is painful seeing the young Kitty go through a phase.
