What If Flash Thompson Became Spider-Man? Yes, again. In this opener for Volume 13, Flash is at the demonstration where he is bitten by the spider. His life mirrors Peter's early career, but he's much rougher and successful, stopping the thief and embracing his celebrity status. Including praise by Jonah, who now supports superheroes after his son's death made him question the abilities of traditional law and order. However, Flash's career goes down the toilet and he's soon living in a trailer park, while his heroics become more violent and he's seen as a public menace. Peter is still a photographer, and Uncle Ben is alive, but Aunt May is dying with no available cure. He uses a tracker to find Spider-Man, amazed when it turns out to be Flash, and begs him to find the stolen cure for May. But Flash, believing Peter is the reason everyone hates him, accidentally kills him. Shocked, Flash tries to make it up by going after the Master Planner and the cure, roughing hoods up until he locates the base, where the planner turns out to be Doc Ock. The fight brings down the building, and, in an event mirroring Amazing Spider-Man 33, Flash comes to terms with himself as he lifts a tremendously heavy load off of himself, literally and figuratively. He realizes he's not a hero, but maybe he can learn to be a good guy, as he gets the cure to May, then turns himself in for murdering Peter. This is pretty good, one of the better ones we've seen through this recent look, and another example of how the Spider-Man stories are some of the best in the series. I just feel that it's held back by modern comic traditions, especially oversized panels taking up most of the already reduced page count. I wish we saw the events leading up to Flash attending the convention, and more of his life and career, but I guess what we got was fine, and overall is an enjoyable read. Also, say hi to Nick Fury as the Unseen, who, since he killed Uatu, is the new Watcher narrator.
