What If Iron Man Demon in an Armor begins Volume 9. Tony is assigned as Doom's college roommate. While he's very annoying, he also proves helpful, pointing out the miscalculation in Doom's formula. Doom enlists his help in constructing a device he claims will give people telekinetic abilities, but once built, Doom reveals it's a mind switching machine, which he uses to transfer his mind into Tony's body. Tony in Doom's body has his memory wiped clean and returns to Latveria in poverty, while Doom in Tony's body heads Stark's empire, even killing Tony's father to take complete control. However, Tony's spirit and intelligence still remain in Doom's body, thus he works hard to pay for his education, and finally receives a doctorate, also creating technologies that make him and Latveria wealthy and prosperous again. Eventually, his business even threatens Doom's enterprise, so Doom sabotages it using a prototype Iron Man suit. But Tony meets him wearing his own prototype Doom suit and the two battle it out, Tony emerging victorious. Doom reminds him of the night they switched minds, and offers to switch them back. However, Tony recognizes that his former life has been dragged through the mud, while the name he's taken is one synonymous with hope and progress, thus he vows to continue doing good as Doom. This is one of my absolute favorites. It's shorter, but I LOVE how their personalities clash and the paths they take as each other. Especially how Tony turns his life around after he's reduced to nothing. I like how their armors are the colors of their main universe counterparts, despite wearing each others outfits. And with how overproduced the artwork's been for most of these issues, it's nice to see a more traditional aesthetic without a billion filters over every panel. It's just a nice break from the numerous event-centric What Ifs that comprise most of this look. Highly recommended. Though now I want to see Tony Doom fight Doom Thing.
