What If Spider-Man Back In Black? Instead of Aunt May, the sniper shoots Mary Jane dead. Peter tracks down the sniper and forces him to reveal his employer. But even after he tells him it was Kingpin, Peter, blinded with rage, kills the sniper, and the exchange is picked up by the Kingpin through a phonecall. Shocked by his actions, Peter rants to Aunt May, telling her to go to the Avengers, before deciding he has to end Kingpin. Who, from his prison cell, has managed to convince SHIELD to transfer him. Peter tries to stop him, causing Tony to intervene, but Peter manages to distract him by telling him Kingpin murdered Mary Jane and knocks him out. SHIELD then tries their hand at taking Peter down, but he knocks them all out and focuses on Kingpin. Only for Tony to recover and continue the fight, incapacitating Peter for a few minutes. He confronts Kingpin, but realizes he can't take action against him. Peter recovers and goes after Kingpin, but Tony stops him again. He realizes Peter won't stop and tries to take him down for good, but Peter exploits a flaw in his armor and depowers him. He follows Kingpin to an airport, where he's about to flee to Europe, but Kingpin reveals he's holding Aunt May hostage, threatening to kill her if Peter doesn't let Kingpin beat him to death. Instead, Peter punches straight through him and gets the guards to back off. Aunt May is horrified at his actions, and Tony and the police arrive to arrest him for murder, where Peter surrenders, content in the knowledge that whichever way his trial goes, he did what he had to do. Yet another really good Spider-Man What If story, with some great artwork and fantastically choreographed fight scenes. And gives a well balanced viewpoint for everyone, where nobody's right and nobody's wrong. And is a fairer depiction of justice than the entirety of Civil War.
