What If Avengers versus X-Men. Unlike the previous volumes, Volume 10 is a miniseries detailing an alternate path for the event. The Phoenix Force destroys the Guardians of the Galaxy on its way to Earth and potential host Hope Summers. Meanwhile, Magneto trains Hope in Utopia, preparing her to receive the Phoenix, when the Avengers arrive to take her into custody. The X-Men refuse to give her up, and, in the commotion, Logan accidentally kills Storm, Magneto blowing up the Avengers ship in retaliation. The surviving Avengers get to shore, where a full-fledged battle nearly breaks out with the groups, but they notice Emma, Magneto, and Hope have abandoned them to intercept the incoming Phoenix Force. Thor meets the Phoenix, but even he's no match for its power, leaving him adrift while it heads for the moon, where it meets Magneto's group and possesses Hope. The Avengers arrive and plead with Hope to let them help, but she sends them back to Earth. Magneto persuades Hope to use her power and cleanse the world of non-mutant life, and even Emma realizes the danger, telepathically telling the X-Men about the situation, who team up with the Avengers to stop Hope. T'Challa fires a missile at Hope, but she deflects it and blows a large chunk out of the moon. As a last resort, T'Challa crashes his ship into the group, but it fails. And Hope tires of Emma and kills her too. They destroy all satellites and rain moon fragments down on Earth, causing massive destruction, before appearing before the remaining group. They fight, with many heroes dying, but Hope starts to lose control of the Phoenix. So Magneto kills her and takes the force for himself, destroying nearly all remaining heroes. Xavier manages to briefly blind him, allowing Hulk and Logan to finally kill him, but the blast of energy wipes out all sapient life. However, Logan is reborn through the Phoenix and he and Jean start to recreate life on Earth. This was a lot better than I thought, though very padded considering I just summed up four issues. The artwork is some of the best, and the ending's bittersweet, with some unexpected twists. It's a good read. And easier to follow than the main event.
