Up next is "The Lost Mission" expansion for Doom 3: BFG Edition with OpenAL Soft's HRTF. Yes, believe it or not, a new BFG Edition source port that replaces XAudio2 has come out in the time since I released the big HRTF comparison video. Surprisingly enough, the 3D positional audio in this port is much more accurate than vanilla Doom 3's OpenAL implementation. It's still not A+ perfection like Quake 4, though. What's interesting to note is that Nerve didn't bother defining any reverb zones for The Lost Mission even though this source port restores EAX in the other two campaigns.

The Lost Mission has to be the single laziest id product since the Spear of Destiny mission packs. Not only were large portions of the level designs recycled from Doom 3 (https://imgur.com/a/7OtEo), but the gameplay is beyond mind-numbing. At least there was some tension in Doom 3 & RoE when your health ran low on Veteran. By the third level of TLM, you already have an SSG with over 200 rounds and an MG with 660 rounds. The "fixes" Nerve Software made to Doom 3 don't help, either. When you can sprint faster than in STV: Elite Forces (pm_runspeed "275"), dodging enemies is trivial. The Lost Mission would be boring even if every single enemy was a Hell Knight or Mancubus.

Over 6 years later, The Lost Mission serves as a painful reminder of the time when the release of a cover-based Doom 4 with regenerating health was a terrifying possibility. Thank God for Marty Stratton.
