Next up is perhaps the strangest official add-on for Doom ever released: Chex Quest, with OpenAL Soft's HRTF in GZDoom. In 1996, someone at General Mills had the bright idea to capitalize on the massive success of Doom by creating a Chex cereal tie-in game for it. They hired Digital Cafe to create a 5-level "MegaWAD" (hey, ask Romero about the term, not me) that would be included free in boxes of Chex cereal and thus "Chex Quest" was born. Here's the kicker: Chex Quest wasn't just a Doom engine game, it was literally a modified Ultimate Doom IWAD with all the non-essential assets erased. It is still possible to see inverted crosses with bright cartoony graphics just by using the -map command in the launch parameters.
A year later, a sequel was released that contained another five levels. While Chex Quest inspired a slew of imitators like "Mr Pibb: The 3D Interactive Game" and "Taco Bell Tasty Temple Challenge", the IP would lay in dormancy until it was resurrected in 2008 by Charles Jacobi. The former lead art designer wound up winning a "Cacoaward" for his dedicated work. While it might seem silly for a childish product like Chex Quest 3 to win an award, it just goes to show the lasting effect this advergame had on '90s kids. There were custom mods (99% shit, BTW), a bootleg "Chex Quest 3" with stolen INFINITY.WAD levels and HacX assets, remakes made in IDTech 4, and even an entire fan community. Chex Quest wasn't just a silly cereal game to be laughed at; it was a genuine Doom engine title worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Heretic, Hexen, and Strife.
