Here's an obscure piece of Doom history for you. This is Perdition's Gate, an unofficial Doom II add-on by Wraith Corporation and WizardWorks that at one point was scheduled to be the third MegaWAD in Final Doom. No, really, it's true. Tom Mustaine contacted Shawn Green and he said id was open to the idea, but at the last second he got a reply saying the "Final Doom window of opportunity had closed". This add-on is one of the few justified abandonware titles because Mustaine himself said it was cool to share it and even posted a link to Wraith's add-ons on his own blog.
Perdition's Gate is essentially bizarro Evilution. The maps are compact, crammed with high-threat enemies, and loaded with details. It shares a lot of the aesthetics and some of the music tracks are even just self-plagiarized with a couple changed notes. The first 11 maps play like standard Doom II maps, but from MAP12 on it becomes sort of like the "Scythe" MegaWAD series. It's pretty clear that Perdition's Gate was rushed, as the levels gradually decrease in length save for a few maps (MAP27). Still, Perdition's Gate offers a decent challenge for both casual players playing through and the hardcore who are bad enough Doomers to pistol start every map.
