This is it, the hardest map crumpets has to offer! An absolute ball buster from the start that eases off once you've ammo efficient. Ribbiks cries havoc and lets loose the dogs of war, this is no joke!
This map had made me reconsider my thoughts into ranking up into difficult wads. I highly struggled with this map even after 2 hours of practicing fights, it is absolute insanity to experience this. I've come to the decision that I need to warm up my skills much more before I start wads like Combat Shock 2 and Stardate20x6, because both these wads have similar difficulty in terms of this map (if not even harder in most aspects).
The start of this map is horrible. You are instantly thrown into the deep end with an arch-vile, 2 pain elementals and a clusterfuck of revenants. Grab the plasma, clear the vile and the pain elemental as quickly as humanly possible, minimise the damage taken which is easier said than done (seeing as you have hell-knights and chaingunners sniping you from up high) and try to get to the berserk fight as quickly as possible. You could do the ancalagon strat and instantly go to the pit fight, but I prefer to have the ssg in my arsenal beforehand.
Now, the pit fight. Oh my god was the pit fight a nightmare. It is by far one of the hardest fights i've had to max in any wad i've speedrun so far. There's so many things that can go wrong very easily, even if you feel as if you've done everything perfectly beforehand. The 2 viles like to hdie behind the hell knights, but if you're lucky, you can get everything to infight with the cyber, making singling them out easier. There's another vile if you hit the switch where a baron of hell is roaming. Try not to get trapped in the space because you'll certainly get brawled to death.
What i personally did was try and grab the soulsphere first, get the cyber to infight the monsters and rush to the rocket launcher. In most cases, the viles would move towards my player, singling them out from the crowd of enemies that wake up. You can use this to your advantage to easily clear out the viles, however it's much slower than the other stratgegy, which is to grab the rocket first and then hide behind the revenant logs. This is much more dangerous as things will corner you, chase you down and most likely target you.
The side fights like the floating monsters + rocket launcher fight aren't so much of a problem. They can go wrong but just take extra care in how you use your weapons. Make sure your health is high for the final bit, since you'll be up against revenant rockets, a cyberdemon and 2 viles. The 2 viles spawn in after the cyber dies. But once you get hold of the plasma and save a few rockets, it's no big deal.
This map for me really opened my eyes and kind of deflated the ego I had towards this game. It was an overwhelming challenge that required good luck at the start of the run along with patience and strict strategy. All these things are their own separate factors, so if one thing goes wrong, the other things may save you. However in most cases they probably won't.
I dreaded this level at first, and I had every right to, since this is basically my introduction to "ribbixian style maps". This is a term i've somewhat made myself, which introduces a concept. This is where a map is hard and very punishing towards even the smallest mistakes. Too little health can result to you being overwhelmed, and too little ammo will also result to being overwhelmed. Your odds are very stacked against you, and Ribbiks wants you to find a way to change those odds towards your favour. It is a genius concept that works swimmingly, however it is absolutely sadistic and gruesome. Even some of the best players out there will not always win to these kind of levels.
I think this map is the pinnacle of crumpets, I really did enjoy its challenge in the end, but my god did it exhaust me. I'm gonna have to take a temporary L here and submit this run to the archives. I could've done better, but at least i've proved that I can beat such a map.
