Doom II: No Rest for the Living w/ 3D spatial sound in GZDoom 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Best HRTF effect at 14:39. I'm playing this with Per Kristian's hi-def soundpack as well as MarphitimusBlackimus's Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project v1.9 for better-than-vanilla gameplay. Sorry about the filtering; it was for video playback, I swear. Sorry about the BASSMIDI piano glitch on the results screen.
This is Doom II: No Rest for the Living (A.K.A. the only reason you bought Doom 3: BFG Edition) with OpenAL Soft's HRTF in GZDoom. This episode was quite the surprise when it launched with the XBLA port of Doom 2 back in 2010. How many other companies besides id would bother creating a brand-new expansion pack for the downloadable console port of a 16-year old game? One can only hope that Nerve Software is granted this privilege once more when Doom 2016 comes to the PS7's cloud gaming network.
In terms of quality, NRftL far exceeds the low, low bar set by "Thy Flesh Consumed". Russell Meakim's maps (1, 3, 4, and 9) have an impeccable sense of detailing, though I find their combat and map layouts to be a pinch bland. Arya Iwakura's maps (2, 5, 6, 7, and 8), however, are a blast to play with some clever use of expanding room layouts and optional puzzles. "Vivisection" is a bit better at the former, but I chose "Inferno of Blood" because I love the intricate BFG9000 secret even if it's ultimately impractical when access is granted. NRftL might not be Plutonia or Sverre Kvernmo's Master Levels, but it still packs quite a challenge compared to the vanilla maps. I actually had to scrap a more-exciting run just because the Archvile in the Yellow Key room ran away from me instead of towards me.
My only gripe with NRftL is its music selection. Why the hell did they recycle 3 music tracks? They used the widely-disliked D_DDTBLU twice but left out the iconic D_DEAD. What, no love for the underappreciated D_ADRIAN or D_TENSE?
