Microsoft's Game Stack has revealed a ton of very interesting things about both the Xbox Series X|S consoles and what Microsoft plans to do with PC gaming too. The Xbox Series X uses Microsoft's Xbox Velocity Architecture, which is essentially a catch-all term for a plethora of tech including the decompression solution inside the Xbox Series APU and the new DirectStorage API and of course other important tech for the xbox includes the Sampler Feedback Streaming.
SFS is currently supported on PC, and allows PRT (Partially resident textures) to be used in highly intelligent ways, with the games developer and game engine better able to understand which MIP level or parts of textures are being sampled by the GPU. Not only this, but SFS allows huge savings in memory thanks to only the most needed texture data being held resident in the memory of the system.
Meanwhile, the PC implementation of direct Storage bypasses the older WIn32 IO model and allows developers to full leverage the power of your storage solution. Your GPU can then be used to decompress the data pulled in from the NVMe drive by directstorage to help continue your GPU being fed with data. Further to this, DirectStorage does so with batches of instructions, and much more efficiently.
Sampler Feedback Streaming is available on DESKTOP RDNA 2 class gpus, and other competing nvidia cards (such as the RTX 30 ampere cards). Microsoft is currently working on DirectStorage and it isn't quite ready for prime time on PC but will be soon.
