Messenger is tightly linked to your Facebook account, so deleting your Messenger profile requires action on your Facebook account itself.
To delete your Messenger account permanently, you must delete the Facebook account it's tied to. Start by opening the Messenger app. Tap on the menu icon, usually located in the top left or right corner, and go to Settings. Scroll down and tap on Account Center, then go to Personal Details. From there, select Account Ownership and Control, and tap on Deactivation or Deletion. Choose your Facebook account, then select Delete Account, and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm. This will delete both your Facebook and Messenger accounts entirely.
If you're only trying to remove or log out of your Messenger account, there are different methods based on your device and whether you have multiple accounts added to the app.
For users with multiple Messenger accounts, tap Switch Profile inside Messenger. Swipe left on the account you want to remove and tap the trash icon to delete it. However, you can’t remove the currently active account this way.
To log out of your active Messenger account:
On Android, long-press the Messenger app icon and tap the i icon to open App Info. Go to Storage, then tap Clear Cache and Clear Data. This will log you out of the app.
On iPhone, the only way to log out is to uninstall and reinstall the Messenger app, as iOS doesn’t allow clearing app data separately.
These steps allow you to either remove unused accounts or completely reset Messenger depending on your need.
