About this video: This video is a complete guide on how to update a Minecraft server to a new version. Whether you are going from Minecraft 1.19 to Minecraft 1.20 or Minecraft 1.12 to Minecraft 1.18, this video will show you how to keep your Minecraft server up-to-date and on the latest version of Minecraft.
Why would you want to update your Minecraft server? Well, when you update you server, you gain the ability to start using all of the new features in a new version when you update. You also get security updates when you update to a new version of Minecraft, and this can be helpful to fix glitches, dupes, etc. that could otherwise hurt your server. Thus, without anymore delay, let’s update your Minecraft server!
The first step of updating your Minecraft server is backing it up. Why do you want backup your server? Because things can wrong, and weird things can happen when you try to update a server. Because of this, we need to make sure we have a copy of all of our server’s files. That way if something does happen, we can just go back to the previous version and try again.
To do this, create a new folder on your desktop, and copy and paste the files in your server folder into the new folder on your desktop. This will basically create two versions of your server. That way if the one that is updated has issues, you can simply use your backup to not lose anything.
Nevertheless, once your server is backed up, download the new server file for your version of Minecraft. We have a link in the description above to all of the versions of Minecraft and the server files for them. Once you have the version of Minecraft you want to update to downloaded, we can update your Minecraft server. All you have to do is remove the server.jar file from your Minecraft server folder. Then, add in the updated/new Minecraft server version .jar file. You may need to update the .jar in your run.bat file depending on how your server is ran.
However, at this point, just start your server right on up! When you do, this your Minecraft server will automatically update to the version you installed the server files for! It’s that easy to update your Minecraft server.
