Ok, I'm back from vacation and I'm back to doing the retro games that I want this channel to be known for. We recently did Dr. Mario, a wonderful classic 'dropping block' puzzle game for NES. Now it's time to add to my SNES library. 'Illusion of Gaia' is a 1994 action RPG released by Enix and developed by Quintet. Set in a fantasy reimagining of Earth, the game's plot centers on a boy named Will who is chosen to save the world from an impending disaster.

Illusion of Gaia was a game that I rented from Blockbuster more than once, but never finished. I had been sticking to games listed on the NES or SNES classic libraries, but it's time to expand a bit. Let's jump right in!

CHAPTER 1 - SOUTH CAPE

There is a pre-game intro scene that comes on if you wait at the title screen for a minute or so. It provides necessary context to the game's overall setting. In an age of exploration, man began to discover ancient cultures as it began discovering new lands. Along with these ancient cultures came new legends and relics. People began entering ancient ruins in search of these relics for wealth, but were then never seen again. These ruins were full of traps, but it's suggested that they're also cursed.

Ok, now smash cut to the opening scene of the game. Meet Will, our protag. A year ago, Will and his Dad attempted to enter the Tower of Babel, when disaster hit his party. Everyone was lost, but Will somehow managed to make it back to the town of South Cape. As school raps up for the day, Will's friends Seth, Lance and Erik will tell Will to go meet up at the usual hangout place: the Seaside Cave.

You're free to roam around town until your curiosity is satisfied, however to progress the story, head down to the shore and enter the little cave there. Seth and Lance are there playing cards, Erik will eventually come in and announce that the princess of Edward's Castle has run away and supposedly gone to South Cape. Afterwards, Will's friends will ask him to demonstrate his special powers.

When you leave the Seaside Cave, you'll be notified that it's getting dark. So it's time to head to Will's house. This is the house directly to the right of the school. When you come in, you'll see a pig in the living room. If you try to go up the stairs, the pig will stop you and a girl will come down. This is Kara. After exchanging a few words, you'll be told to go up stairs. After speaking with your grandparents, you'll hear Kara scream downstairs. She'll reveal that she's Princess Kara and be taken away by the castle guards.

You'll then have dinner with your grandparents and go to sleep. The next day, a letter arrives summoning you to Edward's Castle. The letter tells you to bring the Crystal Ring that belongs to your father. Your grandmother then teaches you a song called 'Lola's Melody'. You're free to leave town now, but first there's a little business in town we can take care of...

Red Jewels

This game has only one side-quest and it's to collect 50 red jewels hidden all over the world. Finding them all unlocks something good and the quest starts right here in South Cape. There are three red jewels we can find here.

1) Fisherman - Let's start with the most annoying one. On the docks near the Seaside Cave, there is a fisherman. He could be in one of three positions: off to the left, on the left-side but below and on the corner of dock right outside the Seaside Cave. What you need to do is keep entering and exiting the Seaside Cave until you see him right outside the cave. It took me about six tries here. When he's right outside the Seaside Cave, he'll say he pulled out a strange teapot. Check the teapot next to him for a red jewel!

2) Lance's Basement - When you leave the dock, there are two houses. Seth's house is on the left, while Lance's is on the right. In the basement, you'll find a red jewel in the right-most pot.

3) School Belltower - The school where we started the game is right in the center of town. If you go up stairs, on the left side of the belltower, you'll find an small opening you can walk into. You can't see it, but there's presumably a pot there. Press A to find a third red jewel.

That's it for now. Join us next time for 'Chapter 2 - Edward's Castle'.
