This video is part of a larger series called the Ship Showcase playlist. This is the seventh video that I recorded.

Ships in this series: Leo, Leo 2

The Leo 2, one of the best, most powerful ships in the game. I beat most of the stages on R-Typer with this baby in my No Miss playthrough. The red laser is a powerful continuous beam that shreds enemies. The blue weapon fires three reflective lasers from the front and 45 degree angles from the Force - you'll be filling up the screen with your bullets when you use it. The yellow weapon is a fire and forget laser that bends at 90 degree angles to hit enemies and is excellent. The Force fires like a Standard Force while detached and behaves the same way. Missiles are standard Homing Missiles, which are always good. The Bits are a powerhouse. When you pick up one Bit icon, it gives you two Bits, and they fire with any weapon, not just the red one (like with most Bits). They even fire while the Force is detached! The Wave Cannon is standard two loop charge. This ship is truly one of the best in the game.

I've heard people on the internet complain that stage 3.0 feels unfinished, but I never understood that - it's fine from my perspective. You fly in eventually wrap around on top of a battleship. It may not be as detailed as stage 3.0 from R-Type Final, but you're in a lab this time, so it's a little more sterile. I like this stage, and my god, the music is excellent here. One of my favorites in the game.

The boss behaves a little differently on R-Typer, firing bullets from the core while it's half detached as opposed to fully, so that takes some getting used to. You've also got popcorn enemies to deal with, so it can be tough. The lasers on top of the ship move pretty fast on R-Typer too, meaning you'll need to be at speed 3 or 4 to stay between them while they're firing.

The Leo is, of course, from R-Type Leo, an R-Type game that's far more arcade-y than usual. You don't get a Force, but when you pick up Bits, you get two that fire the same lasers that you see in this stage. In the North American version of R-Type Leo, when you died, you would respawn immediately rather than at a checkpoint. It has a nice, jazzy soundtrack too, and an announcer that would always say "3, 2, 1, let's go!" when you started the stages. The soundtrack is pretty good for Leo.

As a personal note, one of my favorite parts of stage 3.0 in RTF2 is when you hit some dead space just before you get in front of the battleship and your R-Type boosts a few times while the excellent music is playing. Such a subtle moment, but it's really cool when it happens.
