Splatoon 3: Late defensive action in Clam Blitz [25(6)-9, Range Blaster]
It takes me three shots to hit that Beakon behind the inflatable. I don't have my range right yet, it seems. Missing the Inkbrush as my squidmate goes to score is another matter. I never can hit them. It's nice that they focus on me a bit, though, as my squidmates score a few more clams. I push back up to blast under the basket, getting more splats, not the Inkbrush, and the basket closes when I run out of squidmates. I withdraw to regroup, spotting a clam heading to our basket and helping deter it, finally splatting the Inkbrush, with a lot of help. Another power clam is stopped a bit more easily. By the time the Inkbrush comes back, they don't seem to have noticed that my squidmates have broken their barrier again, not that it matters, as I lead their run nicely and splat them anyway.
I try to get in on the scoring action, blasting away to clear some room rather than just wading in, but the basket closes before I can get the splats. Running away this time doesn't go as smoothly. It's been a good start, lasting almost ninety seconds before being splatted, and I hope to keep up that kind of performance, only to feel the over-confidence building in me, and getting splatted a little out of position in our next push, not twenty seconds later. My next splatting is just as quick, and not great for me. I jump to where the Splat Roller is, aim where it isn't, and get caught by the Inkbrush. At least my panicked shot hits them squarely.
I come back to try to stop a power clam only to find it being dragged behind a Kraken. I'm glad that's been fixed, but there was nothing to be done at the time except defend from further clams hitting the basket. I think we do well. A third splat gets me looking for the fourth that doesn't come, but I remain keen, and a bit of flanking and a spot of luck gets me those extra splats, combining with squidmates' to contribute to a wipeout. We have time to throw more clams in to the basket, but, again, I get a bit confident and end up being a sitting duck.
More clams hit the basket. We only need three more to win the battle, but they won't come this time, and we're back to defending. A Suction Bomb gets a surprise splat, but as I try to pounce in the middle turf, a power clam gets past and our barrier is broken. Another power clam hits our basket, not really threatening our score, and with a couple of splats under my belt I look for clams to counter-attack rather than protect the basket. I make the power clam, no more clams go in to our basket, but the basket stays open for longer than I expect, leaving me vulnerable to the pinklings I just splatted, who no doubt were happy for some revenge.
I return to catch the Roller behind the inflatable, but the other pinklings are more slippery. A Killer Wail aimed at me doesn't help, and I get myself in to a bad position that the .52 Gal punishes. We should be okay, though, with less than half-a-minute to go, not that the pinklings are just going to give up. The Specials come out, including another Kraken, and although we do a decent job to protect our basket, the Kraken is a big distraction. Splatting it puts my back to the other pinklings, and just as we enter overtime our basket is exposed. It's almost a shame the Inkbrush throws the retrieved power clam in to a block.
Another power clam is made and thrown. It hits our basket, breaking the barrier, and the dropped power clam is added. Our lead is intact, but it would be disappointing to lose the battle now. I get one splat, but rely a bit too much on Suction Bombs, sucking my ink tank dry, not that I had much chance of surviving the Inkbrush waved in my face. More clams hit the basket. Only one power clam would lose us the battle, but with only the .52 Gal standing, I like our chances. I push forwards to find them, which I do, but only to get splatted one last time before the battle ends. It felt closer at the end than it did during the battle. Woomy!
