Why Doesn't Yuna Say "I Love You" in Japanese? | Final Fantasy X Translation Analysis

In the ending of Final Fantasy X, Yuna says “I love you” in English. But in the original Japanese, her line is actually “arigatou”, which simply means “thank you”. So how did this change come about and why is the original line an expression of gratitude rather than a confession of love? This video seeks to answer those questions.
