We're over half way with Tangerine Nightmare, and I must say, I am rather shocked at how good this wad has been so far.
Lets get this out of the way first. The Forgotten Land is absolutely gorgeous in terms of combat and in progression. From what i have experience from this map, the start is hot and heavy, lots of sniper enemies, hitscanners and that damn arch vile on the stairs. That vile has caused me far too many deaths, but nevertheless I forgive the monster placement.
The ambushes of this map feel extremely natural and soul crushing. But since I have had an action plan towards these, it has significantly nerfed the full experience for me. The creator of this map (who goes by JC Dorne) exactly knows how to make progression feel good.
The plasma rifle can be accessed after clearing the first big fight, and it definitely gives you a feeling of power as you triumph over it. However, the second fight takes things into a whole new level. The method I used against that fight, made things much easier for me, since it got rid of the main threats (being the 2 arch viles that spawn in) and it rewarded me with a megasphere (which is the final secret of the map). This fight overall makes me speechless on what to say. It is a slaughter fest spectacle that grips your soul and holds you close to it.
My time probably isn't great for a start compared to viper's time. However I have no idea how to exactly cut down the time. Maybe someday I can come back to this map but for now 12 minutes will have to suffice, as I need to complete a bunch of demos by the end of the year.
In conclusion, this map is very time consuming, and for all the good reasons. The feeling of playing the level isn't too overwhelming but it keeps you on your toes for most of it. Afterall, this is Tangerine Nightmare. This level holds me tight into a dearly place, and it's all just enough to hit the sweet spot.
I am very close to calling this a perfect level combat wise. And so with that in mind, this is by far the best map that I have ever played in classic doom! Très bien!
