Doom Wads/Mods Rise Of The Revisits #6:2002 A Doom Odyssey
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/Ports/megawads/2002ado Hard to believe it's been 20 years since the early 2000's when a new millennium began, Doom managed to keep riding its wave high and it was 2002 that two of the most noted megawads of all time were released, called often the "Last great megawads", These were Alien Vendetta who I've covered twice and this ultimate doom release which is by Pcrof (Paul Corfiatis) with help from Kristian Aro, Metabolist (Sam Woodman) and Chris Hansen across 4 episodes, and was updated in 2012 for a ten year anniversary release. I'm using the August 30th, 2002, release for the revisit.
2002 A Doom Odyssey doesn't really have a story for the first two episodes (Rather a re-telling of the events of the original doom) as this megawad was made with a emphasis on challenging maps and intense puzzle solving with a full soundtrack composed by Paul himself, Episodes 3 and 4 focus on us dealing with a spider mastermind and rescuing our wife from a gruesome zombie shotgunner.
Even for a wad that's 20 years old, 2002ado is breathtaking as it uses the familiar mapping you remember from Ultimate Doom and changes it around to keep the experience new, Using 3d bridges along with other features that source ports of the time were also just cutting their teeth on. There are some tough parts such as Episode 1's boss where you need to use every last piece of ammo right to take all the barons out without needing non-berserk punches, Despite that, I think that we'll never ever see a Ultimate Doom megawad like 2002 A Doom Odyssey ever again.
[[As part of Season 2, This was another I didn't like at first, as I had just begun to go over a list of 2002 wads that were released and among them was this release but it grew with me and a lot of the music Paul composed is the kind that sticks with you. With Seasons 1 through 3 I was using a very very old EMachines PC Desktop with Windows 2000 Me installed, It wasn't the best but It was all had back in 2019 and moving to a laptop shortly after Season 4 began was what kept me from killing the series as I had seriously thought of this prior to moving to a laptop since the quality was bad.]]
