Did ya hear that Final Fantasy V PR has been given a release date of November 10th, 2021? I have a feeling I will be giving that one a whirl. So I might as well start doing all the Pixel Remaster games starting from square one! I think I've only done one playthrough of this game in my life and it certainly wasn't the original. 'Final Fantasy' came out in 1987 and in those days, it was my parents who would be the ones picking my games. I don't think they would've ever chosen Final Fantasy for me.

I played FF1 through the 'Final Fantasy Origins' compilation for Playstation that came out in late 2002. It came out on Halloween actually. So in a way, it's fitting that I start this new playthrough around the same time. When I played it, I was a bit shocked at how bare bones it was. But obviously, this was an NES cartridge with about 257 kilobytes on it. It is what it is. But FF1 is a total 80s JRPG, where you HAVE to name your characters and level grinding is probably unavoidable. Luckily, we have the auto-battle mode, which will move things along as quickly as possible. So lets dive in!

CHAPTER 1 - THE CHAOS SHRINE

The world appears to be withering and dying. An ancient prophecy foretold that when this happens, four Warriors of Light will appear with Crystals in their hands and save the world from this peril. As the game begins, our four heroes arrive in the kingdom of Cornelia. The King is avid believer in the prophecy and is amazed to see the Warriors of Light. But to prove themselves, the King asks that they travel to the Chaos Shrine. The King's daughter has been kidnapped by Garland, the King's strongest knight and he asks you to save her.

So, when you're done at the castle, head to town and gear up on all fronts: weapons, armor and spells. Then, it's recommended that you level-up to at least level 3. It went by so quickly, I decided to go up to level 4. You may wish to rest before heading to the Chaos Shrine. I also brought two antidotes, as there's a monster or two that can poison you. The Chaos Shrine is just one big room, there's a couple treasures in the corners, but also two locked doors. Garland is in the center. When you approach him, it will trigger the first boss fight after the brief dialogue.

Garland is not hard at all. I had everyone except my Black Mage using physical attacks. While the Black Mage cast either Fire or Thunder. Supposedly, he's weak against Fire, but Thunder seems to do more damage. I was going to have the White Mage heal as needed, but it didn't come to that, as he dies in just a couple turns. I'm loving this auto-battle mode! As the fight finishes, you'll be taken back to the castle. The King will order the bridge to the North fixed and you're treated to a scene marking the true start of the game, as you cross.
