Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - Ch. 9 - Sunken Shrine
Last time, we went to the Citadel of Trials and experienced something many of my generation would also consider fantasy: career advancement. That's right, we finally upgraded our jobs and got... cooler jobs! I particularly dig the Ninja and despite what anyone says, my Thief/Ninja character has been consistently stronger than my Warrior/Knight. These new jobs open up a lot of possibilities in terms of weapons and spells. Let's see what happens next!
CHAPTER 9 - SUNKEN SHRINE
So the last two chapters were necessary in order to progress the story, however it's nice to get back to my main goal: beating down the Fiends of Chaos and restoring the Crystals to grace. We'll be getting back on track in this chapter. But first, there's a minor thing I need to do: learn to breathe underwater. In the previous chapters, I mentioned that there weren't any clues as to where to head. In this section of the game, I was able to find some clues BUT by the time I found them, I kinda already did it.
In the town of Gaia, there's mention of a fairy that used to live in the spring by the outskirts of town. You'll also find a guy by the church that says he captured it and sold it to a desert caravan. There's a town located northeast of the Dragon Cave islands called Ornaco. If you head there, several people will give you clues that the Desert Caravan is located in the desert nearby. Go there and buy the Bottled Fairy for 40,000 Gil. Then head back to Gaia. When you enter town, the Fairy will automatically spring forth and fly to the spring. Go to the spring and the Fairy will offer to give you a bottle of 'Oxyale', which will allow you to breathe underwater.
Now, head back to Ornaco and in the bottom-right part of town, you will see a path leading to a dock with a woman standing by. She will notice you have the Oxyale and ask you to save the mermaids, revealing she is also one. She'll disappear, allowing you to access the 'barrel' you climb into to take you to the Sunken Shrine. This is the biggest dungeon yet and can be a little overwhelming if you don't know where to head. There's two different paths from the outset: one to the mermaid town and one to the boss. In the floor you start off on, the path to the mermaid town is located to the upper-right. Head there first.
You'll find some good armor on the way, but the true reason for heading here is to find the Rosetta Stone you'll need later. The map function really comes in handy here, so you can avoid frivolously going into empty rooms devoid of treasure. Once you have the Rosetta Stone, head back to the floor you started on and take the path on the upper-left. This place is big, but thankfully there's really only one way forward. On the lowest floor, you'll find the Kraken, the Fiend of Water.
Kraken is weak against Thunder, so I had my new Black Wizard unleash Thundaga after Thundaga on him. After about three turns, he should die regardless of what the rest of your party does. I know this game is a bit nerfed compared to the original, but it really goes to show you what one hour of grinding can do to improve your party. I haven't done any off-screen grinding since Chapter 2, so just by not running from any fights, I've managed to build a pretty strong party.
We're getting pretty close to being done here!
