Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - Ch. 4 - Cavern of Earth
We really covered a lot of ground last time, literally. We were zig-zagging and sailing all over the place! After a very easy boss battle against the Dark Elf King, we got things in motion by giving Matoya her Crystal Eye back. Then back at Elfheim, we gave the Elf Prince the Jolt Tonic, so that he'd finally wake up. At long last, we got the Mystic Key and so we re-visited almost every place we've been to so far, in order to grab the treasures hidden behind locked doors. Now what?!?
CHAPTER 4 - CAVERN OF EARTH
Let's face it: this game is short on details on what to do. But if you're ever at a loss for what comes next, talk to the dancing girl in Cornelia. She'll give you hint as to where to go. Right now she's telling us to go to Mt. Duergar, where there's a dwarf looking for the Nitro Powder we just found. So we'll sail northwest from Cornelia to find a port. From here, it's a short walk to Mt. Duergar, the town of dwarfs. There's not much to do here, but there's a couple more treasures to pick up before talking to Nerrick. Nerrick needs the Nitro Powder to create a canal between the two continents. That way, you can sail into the ocean to the West.
If you've talked to everyone in every town so far, you've no doubt heard of Melmond, a town that lies in a state of ruin due to a vampire in a nearby cave. If you sail straight West from the new canal, you'll hit it in no time. Buy whatever weapons, armor and magic you need (except the Knight's Armor, which is an insane 36,000 Gil! We'll have to get this later). Someone in town will tell you about a nearby peninsula, known as the Devil's Tail. That's where we need to head next. Supposedly, you should stock up on Gold Needles because the monsters in this area that inflict petrification, but I didn't run into anything like that.
Make your way through the Cavern of Earth. There's plenty of treasures with monsters waiting for you, but pace yourself. The Piscodemons we fought in the Marsh Cave are now just regular encounter monsters. I made sure to fight everyone, for the money and EXP, but there's an empty room with an 'Earth Elemental' that you can definitely skip. On the third floor, you'll see a bat blocking your way. This is the supposed vampire that's been terrorizing the town, but he's easy to beat. Literally, he dies in two or three attacks. Afterwards, grab the Star Ruby in the nearby treasure chest, which we'll need for the next section.
