Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - Ch. 10 - Flying Fortress
Last time, we used our trusty new 'Oxyale' (which I pronounce 'oxy-ale', so it's basically oxygenated beer) to venture into the briny deep and explore the Sunken Shrine. While we were there, we found a Ribbon (very exciting) and even more important the Rosetta Stone. If you missed either one of those items, I would recommend revisiting the Sunken Shrine (I mean, you won't really have a choice when it comes to the Rosetta Stone, you need that to progress). This time around, it looks like we're going high and dry.
CHAPTER 10 - FLYING FORTRESS
One last Fiend of Chaos to go before we reach the endgame. There's a couple things we need to do before we can dungeon it up. When we warped out of the Sunken Shrine, we were taken to just outside Ornaco. If you need to buy magic or whatnot, do it now. Before leaving the area, use your canoe to travel up the river just to the east of Ornaco. You'll enter through the waterfall and a cavernous cave. The only treasure is in the room at the end, so just hug the left wall and you'll get there eventually. In the room, you'll see a robot that will give you a Warp Cube, which we'll need later.
There's also some treasures, including the Defender, a sword upgrade. Head back out and back to your airship. We're heading back to Melmond to speak with Unne, the researcher. He'll use the Rosetta Stone to teach you 'Lufenian', an ancient language that is spoken in the town we're heading to next. Lufenia is located on the northeastern continent. You may recall it's been referred to as the 'Tail of the Bird', since the continent looks like a chocobo and it's on the tail section. The bottom part of the town is divided into two section. If you speak to the woman on the lower-left corner of the section to the right, she'll give you the Chime, which we'll also need later. Make sure to buy the magic in the shops located off to the upper right.
Now we're finally ready to head to the dungeon. To the west of Lufenia is a semi-large desert with a tower in the middle. This is the Tower of Mirage. I tried entering this earlier, but you need the Chime to get in. The tower is part one of this dungeon. It has three fairly quick floors and one forced fight (can't really call it a boss). When you advance, you'll use the Warp Cube and you'll be teleported to the Flying Fortress. This area is much bigger, but it goes by quickly.
Like with any dungeon, there's one item we'll need to seek out and that's the 'Adamantite'. There's some good treasure all around, so if you're not struggling, it definitely worth it to fully explore everything. There's a cool little scene where you look down from the Flying Fortress and notice that the four Fiend of Chaos dungeons you've encountered connect at one spot: the Chaos Shrine. That's some foreshadowing for where the final battle will be held...
Tiamat is the Fiend of Wind. He's definitely more challenging than the other bosses we've seen so far. I had to actually turn of the auto battle! But even if you hit a rough patch, just slow down and have your White Wizard cast Full Life on anyone that dies. My Black Wizard is clutch here with Flare. It might've been a little tough there for a second, but Tiamat will go down eventually. Once I warped out of there, I gave my party a well-deserved rest in a cottage...
