Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! Playthrough 13: Alola's Fairy-Type Specialist
The SS Anne has left, and we meet a Fairy-type user from the Alola Region. I battle Mina and her Fairy-type Pokémon, and after that check out Route 11 and train up for the Vermilion City Gym, which specializes in Electric-type Pokémon.
As the rest of the description, I recommend watching the full video before reading past this point of the description.
It's quite surprising to see Mina at Vermilion City port, and to those who are not familiar with Mina, she is a Trial Captain from Pokémon Sun & Moon, but she didn't have a trial until Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, and it was an interesting trial in that game. She uses Jigglypuff and Mr. Mime, while Jigglypuff is very easy, Mr. Mime can be very tricky, as it can use Psywave to deal damage. Mina can be battled daily, so a good way to grind at this point in the game, and when you defeat her in battle, she will give you a Bottle Cap, which increases a Pokémon IVs in Hyper Training.
Next up is Route 11, and there are two new encounters, both of which are Psychic-type Pokémon. There is a Coach Trainer who will give you Pikachu Candy or Eevee Candy depending on your game. To obtain Candy, there is a chance you will get some when catching Pokémon, but if you release Pokémon, you will earn Candy when sent to Professor Oak, and if you release 50 Pokémon of the same species, like Rattata, you will obtain a Rattata Candy, otherwise you will earn Candy based on that Pokémon highest Base Stat. Feeding Candy to your Pokémon will boost their AVs, which stand for Awakening Values, and the maximum is 200 for each stat, giving Pokémon higher stats than normal.
The first Psychic-type Pokémon that you can find on this route is Drowzee, this thing has good Special Defense, but not great offensive stats, but it can be taught Headbutt and Seismic Toss through TM. It will learn Psybeam at Level 22, and Headbutt at Level 27, but you will have likely taught it to Drowzee through TM. When evolved into Hypno, it is a very defensive Pokémon with high Special Defense, it learns Psychic at Level 36, Nasty Plot at Level 46, and Dream Eater at Level 55. Hypno can be used as a Special Attacker with Nasty Plot, combined with moves like Psychic and Shadow Ball for dealing damage, but it is outclassed by Alakazam as a Psychic-type. Hypno isn't a bad Pokémon to use, I would say it's decent, but not the best option, unless you like the Pokémon.
The other Psychic-type found on Route 11 is Mr. Mime, which is found rarely and very hard to catch. It is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon with good Speed, Special Attack and Special Defense and is known for using moves like Reflect and Light Screen. Mr. Mime is stuck with Confusion until Level 30 when it learns Psybeam, and not even Psywave at Level 20 helps. It can get Encore at Level 26, both Light Screen and Reflect at Level 36, and eventually Psychic at Level 46. Mr. Mime's only Fairy-type move it can learn is Dazzling Gleam through TM. It is a decent Pokémon, and one of the very few Fairy-type Pokémon available in the game, and Mr. Mime is a great support Pokémon with moves like Reflect and Light Screen, but the lack of held items, specially the Light Clay does hinder the duration of Reflect and Light Screen.
You can also find Raticate on this route, but it is just there for Pokédex filler, and you should already have Alolan Raticate if you have trained up the Alolan Rattata that is obtained from a trade in Cerulean City, which is decent for most of the early game.
