Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! Playthrough 16: Tunnel Cosplayers
It is time to explore Rock Tunnel, but before exploring, there are still some Trainers on Route 10 to battle against before entering this long cave, which requires the Secret Technique of Light Up. This cave is full of PokéManiacs, Hikers and Black Belts.
As the rest of the description, I recommend watching the full video before reading past this point of the description.
In the first few minutes, I evolve Magikarp into Gyarados, and I find out that Gyarados will only be outside of its Poké Ball when performing the Secret Technique of Sea Skim, which is not available until later on.
There is a Coach Trainer by Rock Tunnel's entrance who will give you the TM for Brick Break. For this point in the game, Brick Break is a great option if you are using Nidoking, Primeape or anything else that can learn it, Pikachu can also use this move, so it is a good replacement for Double Kick.
While the cave is full of Zubat and Geodude, as well as their respective evolutions, Golbat and Graveler. There are some new encounters in Rock Tunnel.
First up is Machop, which for Let's Go Eevee players is their first Fighting-type, as Mankey was only available in Let's Go Pikachu! Machop has good Attack and if caught at Level 21, it will have Brick Break. It can learn Headbutt and Dig through TM, and at Level 28, it will evolve into Machoke. If you have a way to trade, you can evolve Machoke into Machamp right away, and Machamp is the only Pokémon that can learn Strength in this game, which is learned as soon as it evolves. Machamp's level up moves are not much different to Machoke's, so you can choose whether or not to evolve Machoke right away. It learns Bulk Up at Level 37, and Superpower at Level 48. With high Attack and about average Defenses, Machamp is a great team member if you are in need of a Fighting-type. Machamp is one of few Pokémon that you can ride in this game.
Next up is Cubone, and unfortunately due to there being no held items, Cubone misses out on the extra power it would have from the Thick Club. It comes with Bone Club and can be taught Dig and Brick Break through TM. It learns Bonemerang at Level 26, which Cubone and its evolution Marowak are the only Pokémon that can learn Bonemerang. The nice thing about Marowak is that it can learn Swords Dance when it evolves, making up for the lack of held items, and its last few moves are Thrash at Level 36, and Double-Edge at Level 46. Marowak has good Defense, average Attack, but a bit on the slow side. It's not a bad option, but not having the Thick Club does hinder Marowak's offensive capabilities.
It's great to have Rhyhorn available at this point in the game, and it comes with Rock Throw when caught. When caught at Level 23, it can learn Drill Run in one level, giving Rhyhorn a good Ground-type move for this point in the game. Rhyhorn has good Attack and Defense, but is very slow, it can learn Megahorn at Level 36. It isn't until Level 42 that Rhyhorn will evolve into Rhydon, but you can hold off on Rhyhorn's evolution until Level 43 so it can learn Rock Slide, which Rhydon doesn't get until Level 48. It can get Earthquake at Level 54, and Rhydon learns a wide variety of TMs, including Brick Break and the Elemental Punches. While the late evolution level does hurt a bit, Rhyhorn can make a great team member if you are looking for a good Ground/Rock-type to add to your team, and also you can ride Rhyhorn and Rhydon.
Last up is the 1% encounter with Kangaskhan, and yet again, you can ride Kangaskhan, while your partner will be in its belly pouch along with the baby Kangaskhan. It will come with Fake Out and Bite when caught, and Kangaskhan can be taught Headbutt through TM. For Level up moves, Kangaskhan can learn Mega Punch at Level 28, Dizzy Punch at Level 33, Crunch at Level 39, Outrage at Level 44, and Sucker Punch at Level 50. It has a great TM movepool as well, making Kangaskan a very solid Pokémon, and it has well rounded stats, so it has no bad stat, except for its low Special Attack, so Kangaskhan cannot make use of many Special Attacks it can learn through TM. If you are lucky enough to find that 1% encounter and capture it, Kangaskhan can make a good team member.
The special spawn for Rock Tunnel is Charmander, even though it can be evolved into Charmeleon right away, you should have picked up the Charmander back at Route 24 if ever you want to use it on your team.
