What If Peter Parker Became The Punisher? When Peter finds the burglar that killed Uncle Ben, he kills him with his own gun, the event captured by a Daily Bugle photographer that just so happened to be on the scene. Peter continues his career as normal, but more violently than usual, though still trying not to resort to killing. However, Green Goblin's appearance make Peter realize he needs to step things up, creating a wrist gun and arsenal of bullets that he uses to slaughter the Sinister Six. He semi-retires Spider-Man, focusing on completing high school and later college and forming relationships, only venturing out to take care of the big fish, which also scares crime into hiding. Goblin remains Peter's deadliest enemy, but, as in the main continuity, he manages to subdue him and suppress his villain identity, nullifying the threat that would mean Peter would have to kill him. But Goblin comes back and kidnaps Gwen, and Peter is forced to shoot him, also saving Gwen. Peter confesses his identity to her, before retiring it to focus on their relationship. And the comic ends with Frank seeing his family killed, before deciding to become the Punisher. Yeah, this one doesn't work. The dramatic narration sounds silly coming from Peter, and he never shows any of the Punisher's traits. No reaction at all to the fact he's been killing high profile villains in cold blood, which you'd think would severely mess up the mind of a college student who's never had to see conflict! It just feels too safe, like they didn't want the image of Peter tarnished, so they gave him Punisher's life, but none of the consequences. And Frank becomes the Punisher anyway, so what's the point? I guess it's clever the comic subtly hints that Peter is technically responsible for Frank's family dying, as he didn't take responsibility to stop street crime, but nothing comes of it, so it's a wasted point. This almost falls into so bad it's good territory for how ludicrously the idea doesn't work, but that still makes this not a great story. Just check out the previous What If featuring The Punisher and the symbiote for a better take on this idea.
