What If EXE-Men. In this variation, the world is almost completely linked through neural cyberspace, with anyone able to bypass most of the lockouts dubbed the EXE-Men, who are seen as dangerous by those who seek to control the digital world. Xavier meets with Cable and Domino in real life and tries to convince them to save Erik from the Nimrod virus threatening to reprogram his mind. They at first refuse, but agree when Xavier explains he's dying and can't do it himself. Domino enters cyberspace while Cable protects the two from real world threats. Domino draws Nimrod out and fights the virus, damaging it long enough to infiltrate Erik's fortress. But Erik reveals he created Nimrod as a distraction so he could finish a device that will rewrite the DNA of all who log in and give them the EXE gene. He starts to kill Domino, forcing Xavier to enter cyberspace and confront Erik, seemingly killing him, the strain also killing Xavier. However, as the two wake up, it's revealed Xavier has downloaded his mind into Erik's, taking over his body, and, with his new form, recruits a team of EXE-Men to defend the less fortunate from the cyber oligarchies. While this was short, this was a surprisingly very fun read, with some great worldbuilding and a clever reimagining of the X-Men in a cyberpunk setting. Very Elseworlds-like. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing an entire series around this concept, in a similar vein to the X-Men 2099 world. Though they'd need to change the name, as every time I say EXE-Men, I die a little inside.
