The Dark Eye: Demonicon (or just known as Demonicon, at least that's how the game shows up in the Steam library) is an RPG game released in 2013 by Kalypso Media. It features the ruleset and the game world of 'the Dark Eye' series - the German alternative to Dungeons and Dragons - created in 1984 as a tabletop game.
I remember playing it back in 2013 just after the release. The game was probably a part of some gaming magazine, I actually don't remember how I came across it. But I DO remember that it was somewhat off from the very beginning. There was one particular element which made it stand out from other standard RPGs I had played... the part of the main plot. In this game, you (as the main character) and your sister love each other a little bit too much - this will be mentioned from the very beginning of the game, in the first dialogues. And this will actually be the major driving force of the story and the events to unfold! Initially, I thought that I had just misunderstood some dialogues or missed some key facts. Even though I already was at the point of getting my degree in English or just after that, I still could not believe my eyes. Then I reach the first or second major boss, got frustrated because of the clunky combat mechanics and rage quit the game. Until now :P
This is my second attempt to beat this game. Enjoy :)
In this part: from the intro, we learn about a dark ritual that involved pregnant women. We also learn that twenty years before the events in the game, Borbarad, an evil mage, swept the lands with an army of undead. Those who survived, stood their ground. Borbarad fell during one of the battles, though the war went on until the so-called Rondra's knights freed the city of Warunk. Here, the intro ends with a remark that the city of Warunk is the last hope of the characters to settle down and stop running (from something). The game proper begins with our visit to a place called Moloch Mountain. This is where Calandra, our sister, fled. From a dialogue with our father, we learn that Calandra is supposed to get married to a noble knight, Falk, so that all three can become citizens of Warunk. We also learn that our main character is a douche and that... Calandra supposedly came to the place with another man to lose virginity and escape from a forced marriage. Our father wants us to find Calandra and warns us NOT to mix our blood no matter what. This section of the game is basically a tutorial at the end of which we are also introduced to an important game mechanics - decisions. At the end of each major section of the story we need to make decisions that influence the fate of some characters or events. Then, our choice is commented on in a short cutscene. Oh, and the game has only an autosave, no multiple save files or anything, so once you choose or do something, you must live with the consequences.
After the tutorial in Moloch Mountain, we get back to Warunk. A city that has been struck with a plague. We live in the outskirts of the town with all the sick and infected, because we are not citizents. The rest of this part of the gameplay is about running errands, making preparations for the wedding, kissing your sister (YES, kissing your sister), etc. Finally, we meet Falk and his mother. The whole meeting ends up with an argument, so Falk gives us a pass to go to the city and find ourselves a woman to blow off steam. Yes, another strange way to push the story forward. We get access to the city because our future brother-in-law wants us to get laid. Riveting xD But, after all those dialogues about Calandra's virginity, nothing will probably surprise me at this point.
In the new section of the city, we learn about two opposing factions (the Cartel and the City Guard), explore the large area and try to find some loot and side-quests to boost our character a bit.
