One more desert chapter done without fliers, the presence of all three foot mages (including Lissa) making mobility on the map somewhat more tolerable. Libra is recruited here and is useful for a total of one chapter before being summarily switched out due to being a prepromote. He's a proficient fighter and mageslayer at this stage, but his lack of availability in the midgame will hurt his performance later on - he doesn't really mind with staff utility as his biggest strength.

Libra can be recruited as early as turn 2 by having Ricken drop Chrom in his ally movement range, but this relies on Libra positioning himself north in relation to the mage he kills. Most of the time, he can only be recruited on the following, third, turn.

On turn 5, reinforcements will come from the north - four wyvern riders - and the forts in the centre of the map. The latter seem to trigger the big wave of enemies from the east to draw near, Tharja leading the way. They generally have better movement options than my army, so by the time the reinforcements trigger on turn 5 it's sensible to pull some of them beforehand.

I briefly considered reclassing Donnel after feeding him most of the enemies on the map, including the boss, getting him very different class bases to work with (but only bronze axe access as a fighter). I decided against it in the end, as the Villager skill that boosts hit rate and avo by 15 requires Donnel to get to lv. 15 first. Seeing as how the enemies he'll be fighting will be all above him in level, it's worth putting up with villager bases for a little while longer to turn him into a mean dodgetank for later maps. His high growths with Aptitude are now starting to catch up with him. Until then, he can look forward to wielding steel and killer lances in combat with Kellam by his side whenever he's fielded.

The last wave of wyvern riders outmove my units easily, but the hand axe ones are weaker offensively and can be baited and countered if somebody is lucky to be nearby. Because of the desert penalties, I often end up leaving one enemy unit live for enemy phase, so it's important to ensure no fragile units are in range at too low HP.

The bosskill is a simple one with Chrom dealing effective damage with his rapier and frequently proccing the dual attack with his Robin support. Poor Gaius though... He couldn't ORKO anybody with the killing edge on this clear.

Tharja? She's pretty helpful for killing one of the stragglers, which we couldn't go with on the turn she's recruited, though she does require a +spd pairup partner to double, and one may not always be available with this party. Being lv. 10, she'll be benched for a couple of maps or so before being summarily brought back.

In the next map, I'm indeed going to recruit Anna in her paralogue.
