Endless runners and variants of the endless running genre are all the rage these days. They're simple, they're easy, and they're fun. Gear Jack Black Hole is another in that prestigious company, and like the others in the genre, it's a lot of fun.
First off, the game has a great art aesthetic. It's got all sorts of stylized graphics that look downright pretty. Sure, they may be simple vector graphics, but that doesn't stop them from looking really neat. The background and the level design are all pretty spiffy, making for some excellent-looking levels as you dash through them. That, coupled with the parallax effect, allow for some rather immersive gameplay that's certainly a treat to look at. It's worth mentioning that besides the main player character, most of the foreground graphics are solid black. The background graphics are in lighter and lighter shades of gray with varying levels of saturation, making for some rather stylistic atmosphere.
Add the different animations to that, and you've got some great graphics. The primary animation you'll be looking at is the running animation. Beyond the running animation though, you've also got the different parts of the environment. You'll be faced with falling boulders, pits of lava, spiky barricades, and all sorts of other things that you'd expect from an endless runner. What's neat is how well these all look, despite the stylized all-black (with some yellows and reds) look that the game pulls of so well.
The sounds feel like they would be right at home on an old-school gaming system, but they do also have a more modern flair to them. There aren't any chip tones here, but they do sound like direct descendants of said chip tones and definitely carry the same nostalgic feel to them. You do have a slightly more chip tone-y music track though, and while it's not exactly 8-bit sound by the strictest definition of the term, you do hear the inspiration and underlying feel in it, making it feel like an old-timey game with new-timey graphics.
As with other endless runners, you spend the entire game endlessy running (as if that wasn't self-explanatory enough). Unlike other endless runners, this game isn't in 3D, and you're not using an over the shoulder camera. Rather, it's a side scroller, and it also has aspects of platforming in it with the different obstacles that you have to dodge. You'll be going through all sorts of different environments, all with their own obstacles. These environments range from green swamp lands to red volcano ranges, blue jungles, and everything in between.
You'll have to be on your toes, as the game can get pretty fast pretty quickly. You'll mostly be running, but you'll also have to jump to get past certain obstacles and get the bonuses, or slide down to duck under the same obstacles. The game starts you off easily enough, but it does get harder and trickier as the game goes on, so keep on your toes!
And that just about wraps it up for Gear Jack Black Hole, if you're looking for some fun endless running action, then go on and grab yourself a copy of this free game, you won't regret it!
