Today, we have amazingly high resolution graphics. We've got games that look as good as (or even better than, in most cases) the FMVs and cutscenes of the games of yesteryear. Any time now, we'll be having really photo-realistic graphics at our gaming fingertips. Still, despite all that power and advancement, there's still something rather charming about 8-bit graphics and 8-bit gameplay. Enter Gunslugs, a pixelated little game that brings you some old-school NES-style shooting fun.
With a name like Gunslugs, you'd expect this game to be something like Worms, featuring slugs of some sort blasting one another apart with various weapons. What you actually get is something more like Metal Slug (if you can remember that long ago), a side-scrolling shooter that brings you nonstop action, explosions, and of course, shooting.
Granted, the graphics aren't anywhere nearly as pretty as those from Metal Slug, but they do have their own charm to them, with just about everything being rather stylized little pixelated blobs meant to represent the various soldiers. All of the sprites are barely a pixels wide and tall, with probably no more than sixteen base colors to them, but everything works rather nicely together to create the feel of some old NES game. Ok, granted, the more techy out there will argue that the palette is more in keeping with the SNES or that the effects wouldn't have been achievable on an NES, but just go with it, it's a stylistic thing.
Like the graphics, the sounds are also rather old school. While not exactly chip tones or 8-bit sound, the music and effects certainly take inspiration from the era. As with the graphics, there's still a modern take to the audio making it so that you get the best of both worlds with the upbeat music and sounds.
The game is fairly easy to control, with the buttons clearly marked on the screen. Unlike some other games though where you're covering half the gameplay screen with your thumbs while playing, this game takes that into consideration and the action is rarely obscured by errant digits. Be careful though, as it can be tempting to mash the buttons at times, or to flip your device around like an old controller back when you were a little kid, but that's a rather expensive device you're holding, so be careful.
The gameplay is refreshingly simple. There's nothing complicated about it, you run around, and if you see something moving, you shoot the crap out of it. If you see something that's not moving, shoot it anyway, it might contain an interesting drop. the gameplay is fast-paced and rather hectic, but it's all great fun as you'll be thrashing about (in-game at least, or so I hope for the sake of your device) blasting apart the endless waves of bad guys coming at you. Of course, it wouldn't be a shooting game without powerups for your gun, so you'll get dual machine guns, grenade launchers, and all sorts of other family-friendly fun.
So if you're feeling particularly nostalgic and are looking for something to rekindle your memories of old timey console shooters, then head on over to the download below and grab yourself a free copy of Gunslugs!
