The art may be a bit old school, but you will be challenged once you step inside the dungeons. Watch your step in this arcade-theme mobile game called Meganoid. The task here is to control your character in each level and reach for the torch. Avoid spike pits, falling boulders or rocks, and spear traps, to prevent your character from starting over again. There are also secret areas where you can make a shortcut to finish each level easily. Finish the level quickly to earn a star. Finishing the level with complete diamonds also gives you a star and unlocks the Sarge mode level.

Old school platformers were a whole lot of fun. Granted, they could also be unforgivably and maliciously (and throw in a sadistically in there for good measure as well) difficult, but that just added to the fun factor of those games. With this game, Meganoid, you get some of that old school, retro flavor at your fingertips, with some added modern flare thrown into the mix.

With a name like Meganoid, it would have seemed that the game be something about androids or robots or some such. Turns out that it's mostly just a name, and the the game doesn't have anything really to do with robots, and is instead more of a run and jumper in the style of Mario or Megaman.

The graphics are probably the first clue you'll get to just what kind of game this is. Everything has that retro look to it, with stylized 8-bit graphics. Granted, they're not real 8-bit graphics, but then again, none of the games today that advertise themselves as such really are 8-bit. Still, the pixelized look and the nostalgia said looks provides works really well with the game.

The sprites and the environments are all done in this style, with just about everything being pixelated and drawn with probably less than sixteen colors. Even the effects are done that way, with no "cheating" by using translucency or alphas as some other games in the same style do.

Of special note here would be the music though, which is really, really catchy and feels like something from a Mega Man level featuring Funk Man or Disco Man or something. The music is repeated throughout the entire game, but it's catchy and fun enough that it doesn't really feel repetitive at all. In fact, it's fun and catchy enough that' it's easy to get stuck in your head even hours after playing the game. The sounds are also reminiscent of the retro feel the game is trying to evoke. You've got sound effects reminiscent of NES effects, but again with some modern flair to them.

The controls in the game are fairly simple. You move left and right with taps to the screen, and you jump with another tap to the screen. Things can get pretty fast-paced though, so it's best to be on your toes. Also, the jumps often have to be perfectly timed, like when you're nabbing something off a spiked floor and have to activate your double-jump right after you hit the bonus but right before you hit the spikes. It can require some finesse, but it's great fun once you're able to do it.

Where the game really shines is gameplay. While probably not exactly Nintendo hard, the game is certainly more difficult than other games in the same vein. You do pretty much have unlimited lives to try and finish levels, so it's not really unforgiving. Thus, it can be fun to experiment and explore. As the game is a platformer, you'll have to contend with all sorts of obstacles such as spiked floors, moving spikes, and all sorts of other spiky spikes. Of course, there are also hidden areas and bonuses, so there's that.

Well, that about wraps it up for this little article. So if you're up for some fun old-school platformer fun, then go on and grab yourself a free copy of Meganoid!
