Breath of Fresh Fire is a mod by ludmeister for the GBA version of Breath of Fire 2. This mod changes a number of things such as rebalanced characters, expanded shaman fusing options, rebalanced spells, and so on. The difficulty is lightly boosted as well.

The latest version of the mod can always be found here: http://jeffludwig.com/bof2/download.php

As always, do your own search for the ROM you need.

Did some off screen grinding of characters to even out everyone level wise. Anyone not at lv21 was brought up to that level via grinding in SimaFort on 95% Mimics. This meant I got a ton of zenny to arm my main four with and still have plenty to spare.

As for acquired spells for select characters...

Spar: Silence, Protect, Paralyze, Exit, Warp, Drain
Bow: Raise
Jean: Paralyze, 1000Cuts

Now then, first thing's first...make sure Sten's in your party and he's properly leveled. The next area to explore is going to require him to be in your team.

Next, talk to the man between the item shop & inn. He'll mention needing the Famous Flute from HighFort in order to communicate with the locals of Tunlan. Proceed then up two flights of stairs, then enter the right house and check out the cabinet in back for a Tolen. I got this off screen and utilized it at the Othello game in Township to get a Royal Dagger for Sten and a Rainbow Robe for Nina.

Onto the world map now. The party hops on Grandpa, then sails east until there's a beach directly north of them. From there, they head south until a hut appears to their east, then makes landfall at the beach just southeast of there. Head east from there and find a way north into the mountains. Should be a way by the northern edge of a lake so long as you're going east.

Only one new enemy encountered who was a total pacifist in battle, but more importantly...after that talk with the Great Wise Tree, the battle theme has been changed to suit the more serious tone the story has taken.

In any case, at the top of the mountains is HighFort. Sten needs to be in the lead if you wish to enter and you also needed to talk to that guy that mentioned the Famous Flute in Tunlan.

After entering the first building, the party is stopped by a guard, but recognizes Sten as a survivor of the Goonheim war (Goonheim...lovely name there). Sten then says he's a coward and keeps running away. The real hero of the war, as he puts it, is Trubo. The guard, Gayne, seemingly brushes that off and welcomes him back regardless.

Sten gets cold feet about meeting up with Trubo and asks the others to look for the flute. Follow him downstairs and talk to him once, then go back up the stairs and go north all the way towards the throne room. If you went the right way, you should be told by a couple guards that there's a war plan being sorted out in there.

Of course, it's nothing more than evil baddie that will likely be a failure of a boss, Shupkay, planning evil things. Apparently there's a secret weapon being created and she wants to take over the world with it. Cue in our party who falls for the classic cartoon trap door gimmick, forcing the view to go back to Sten. He worries for his friends and decides to go look for them.

Before doing that, head down the nearby stairs until you reach a room with three chests containing Stealth Clothes, Poignard Dagger, and an Elixir (one target, fulls recovers hp).

Sten also runs into a Pharaoh on the way. That enemy can actually be a threat. Rotten Breath does what you think it does, but affects the entire party (of which Sten is the only member, but something to think about for later). That's not what makes it threatening. No, the reason for the threat goes to Freeze, a move that hits a single target for 100+ damage. You'll have to Potion up after one gets used.

Anyways, Sten should follow in the footsteps of his fellow party members, but on a bridge just outside the item & inn, he is stopped by none other than Trubo. He's not exactly happy to see Sten back. So much so that he initiates a fight. Just defend and use Potions to keep Sten's hp close to full before the fight ends.

Afterwards, more of Trubo going off on Sten. This includes mentioning stuff about how Sten more or less abandoned the Princess in a way because of running. Trubo's solution? Manly fight by way of blowing up the bridge and hoping for a winner in three turns and another fight starts, but this one you need to win. Just cast Flame twice and it'll all be over.

Afterwards, the two fighters fall to a lake at the bottom of the castle and Shupkay's brought up again after the two are out of the water. Apparently to unleash the full destructive force of this castle, the energy of someone from royalty is required. Lovely.

The plan to hopefully stop this act of evil? Split up and hope for the best basically!

When you gain control of Sten, head inside the nearby building to heal up and save at the dragon statue.

More next time!
