Breath of Fresh Fire is a mod by ludmeister for the GBA version of Breath of Fire 2. This mod changes a number of things such as rebalanced characters, expanded shaman fusing options, rebalanced spells, and so on. The difficulty is lightly boosted as well.

The latest version of the mod can always be found here: http://jeffludwig.com/bof2/download.php

As always, do your own search for the ROM you need.

Last time, Ryu & Katt were about to leave Ruins and try to find a lead on the female thief. Heading to Coursair seemed to lead to nothing so perhaps another visit to Hometown is in order.

Upon entering town, it doesn't take long to find some scuffle happening at the magic school. Three men are trying to take a girl, Nina, to see their boss. Nina is not having any of that crap as she blasts the men with magic. They run off and she goes inside. Follow her up to the 2nd floor.

You'll see Nina talking with her teacher, Yoji, on the 2nd floor. She apologizes for using magic, then Katt barges in desiring to learn magic herself. Yoji thinks she isn't the type that's going to wait around and learn slowly.

Cue in another man like the ones Nina shoved off earlier. He mentions Mina and, sure enough, she decides to go with him. I don't think she's going to take this sitting down though. Probably going to fry the Joker Gang's leader when she gets in front of him.

After she leaves, Yoji says that Mina is being held hostage. Guess she didn't make it back to Windia quickly enough. Katt wants to go punch said gang's lights out. I say we do that.

To find the Joker Gang's hideout, cross the bridge like you were going to head towards Coursair, but at the signpost shortly after crossing the bridge, go northwest. You should find a cave entrance which is what you want.

Doesn't take long before the guard at the entrance decides to try killing the two of you upon talking to him. This guard which is called a Hood only has his normal attack, but it can do 25-30 damage to one target. Still, you should be able to kill him long before Ryu or Katt get into any danger hp wise.

Head northeast and take the entrance here into the next room and talk with the guard. Just guess something random for his question. If you get it right, great. If not, you get to kill another Hood for lots of experience and zenny. I think the latter is more preferable, especially for Katt who could use the experience.

After the fight, go north and talk to the guard. He mentions a switch in the nearby hole. Examine it to find that your lead character is now poisoned and has taken roughly 25% of his or her current hp in damage, then get vaulted into a fight with a Hood & Poison Spider. The latter enemy does ~20 damage a hit. You'll actually need to pay attention to hp levels and heal here, but it still should not be a particularly nasty fight.

Head north after the battle and take the stairs down, then head east a bit, then south to a chest with a LuckUp. Head northeast to the entrance in to the next room where, sure enough, the leader of this gang, the aptly named Joker, is. Drop the first guard you see, then watch as Nina is basically forced to almost pledge her services to Joker to save Mina, but cue in Katt who whacks the guard holding Mina.

I don't think you've any more leverage now Joker...and that group of Hoods you just sent after Ryu & Katt? Yeah they could be nasty, but that FrRock I picked up awhile ago can be used to kill all of them at once. Strategy!

Joker is clearly in deep trouble as Nina fires some magic to cause boulders to fall on to Joker. She thinks we're in the clear. Girl, I saw him change WHILE the boulders were falling on him. I don't think we're in the clear...

Sure enough, Joker breaks free in his new demon form and decides on the course of action he should have taken in the first place...kill Nina. Cue the next boss fight with Joker.

Unfortunately for Joker, he never seemed to pick up on anything beyond a physical attack which is not strong enough to kill anyone in a single hit, even Nina who is participating in this fight. Ryu & Katt can do what they do best while Nina spams Aero. Joker should fall quickly. If everyone survives, the experience will be enough to shoot Nina up to lv9 and give her the Haste spell.

After some words are exchanged, you'll be escorting Mina home to Windia with the services of your first offensive spellcaster, Nina, in your hands.

There's always two things common to a Breath of Fire game. A blue haired boy named Ryu is one. Nina is the other. Typically in the BoF games she's a spellcaster and it's no different here. Her physical durability is pretty bad, but she makes up for this with powerful spells. She has a spell for every element with her Thunder spell being able to hit all enemies. Nifty!

Time to exit this cave while grabbing a couple treasures along the way (Silver Dagger, 1000 zenny).

Make way to Coursair, upgrade Nina's armor, then rest & save.
