Breath of Fresh Fire is a mod by ludmeister for the GBA version of Breath of Fire 2. This mod changes a number of things such as rebalanced characters, expanded shaman fusing options, rebalanced spells, and so on. The difficulty is lightly boosted as well.

Alrighty, here's a fun game given a boost by a pretty fun little mod that makes the game more accessible & given more options for what you can do.

Of course, those options will come as they are introduced. For now, the story kicks off with a young Ryu as he's trying to find little Yua for Ganer.

As you gain control for the first time, check the nearby cabinet for a Wooden Rod, something that can't be utilized just yet.

As you exit the church there are two houses. Explore both as there a cabinet in each house with a Herb in it.

Next, have a chat with the two women just northeast of the church. They'll tell you that Yua is likely playing in the grasslands area in the back of town. Head to the northern part of town and the bush blocking the way into the next part of the area should be moving, allowing you to make it disappear.

In the next area, just keep going north. There are two side paths, but both lead to dead ends.

Once you go north into the third screen, color returns to the game world. Keep on moving along the path to find Yua...and a random enemy that jumps out of the bushes to attack you. Nothing you can really do here until you lose enough hp and Ganer saves the day with magic.

As Yua explains after the battle, she comes here because she can dream of her mother in this particular area. After getting a minor scolding by Ganer, she leaves with him and you get the option to rest here. Feel free to do that, then return to the church and talk with Father Hulk to advance the story.

During the night, you are woken up by another kid, Bow. He's going to find a bigger town to steal from and would like you to tag along. Agree to this, then exit town to the south.

On the world map, go west and north to a cave entrance. Once you enter it, Bow lights up the candle he swiped from the church and you can explore it. It doesn't take long to find something...a tail perhaps? Keep following to get your grand prize...Bow getting knocked aside by a demon. After some curious words to Ryu, he attacks him.

...Let's just say Ganer is not going to be able to do a drive by life saving magic spell this time sadly. One swipe is all this demon is going to need to eliminate Ryu...even though he whiffed on his first attempt which was hilarious.

As the intro starts to come to a close, this demon mentions Ryu being the "destined child" and wants to see some kind of gate opened...and then, the strength of god shall be known. Quite interesting.
