Breath of Fresh Fire is a mod by ludmeister for the GBA version of Breath of Fire 2. This mod changes a number of things such as rebalanced characters, expanded shaman fusing options, rebalanced spells, and so on. The difficulty is lightly boosted as well.

The latest version of the mod can always be found here: http://jeffludwig.com/bof2/download.php

As always, do your own search for the ROM you need.

Only getting a few things done in this video, but they are all important things that are going to pay off later on.

It starts with Ray. As he mentioned near the end of the last video, he will grant one person St. Eva's blessing.

Translation? Someone gets to learn the Raise spell. It costs 9 ap and has a 70% chance to revive a target. Not bad considering Revive items are still quite expensive.

The question is who to give this to. Rand or Bow don't need it as both will learn this spell naturally. Katt is out because her ap isn't going to get high enough to be able to utilize this. That leaves Ryu, Nina, or Sten as the choices.

Sten's getting to a point where his physicals are adequate enough that he doesn't need to rely on Simoon for damage except for high defense targets, meaning his lowish ap won't be too much of a hassle.

Nina is a great choice because of her huge ap pool and the ability to refill it with her Will ability.

I, however, give it to Ryu. I figure he'll be in the party the entire time and doesn't use his ap for a whole hell of a lot aside from the occasional out of battle healing sprees.

With this done, Ray leaves and you can do whatever right now. We will need to go back to Capitan to advance the story, but beforehand, we'll talk to Niro. He will let you change your party members around.

Bad news? No female thief found means no Bow available for selection.

Good news? Rand is available for deployment!

Since I never talked about him before...

I remember how Garr from BoF3 was a literal wall that could not be brought down by physicals very easily, if at all, and delivered absolutely devastating physical strikes.

Rand is basically Garr, but BETTER. He might not look like it now with his less than stellar attack power and defense that's worse then Katt, but I remind you that he's a good 5-6 levels behind Ryu & Katt right now. As Rand levels, he's going to be a giant sized ball of hp, strength, and stamina. He's also got a rather decent amount of ap & wisdom. His only bad stats are agility and, to a lesser extent, luck.

Rand's unique skill is Wake, a move that may revive a character with 1 hp. Not something I want to rely on in a desperate situation.

After going around a few towns upgrading Rand's equipment with the help of Sten's Warp spell, I decide to hoof it from Windia to Capitan so Rand can pick up levels. He does just that and picks up Simoon at lv9, thereby giving him a damaging move he can rely on until his strength picks up. Sten doesn't disappoint either as he picks up Purify at lv12.

Anyways, upon reaching Capitan, you may notice a girl in red clothing between the inn and a house. Talk to her and she takes only Ryu to see the old woman in the hut to the north. She attempts to do a fusion by combining Ryu with the girl. The results are...not exactly a good end for the old woman & girl as the hut and surrounding forests get torched.

As the duo survey the damage, the old woman mentions the power of fusion can't hope to top that of one with the power of a dragon inside him, then wants Ryu to find them a new home.

I think I know just the place for them, but first...Ryu gets into a fight all by himself. This might be bad, but...

A. Weak enemies!

B. Ryu has three new abilities to play with, each one being a whelp transformation move.

The latter is most important. In vanilla, Ryu had to expend all of his ap to do damage based on how full his ap was. In this mod, each of the whelp transformation attacks costs 7 ap and do damage based on Ryu's level. Quite nice, especially if you hit a weakness.

Anyways, back at Capitan, talk to the man by the inn to be whisked away back to TownShip (the new name of Ruins). The old woman & girl, the fire shaman Sana, claim the room Bow set up for him & Ryu. Bow's not exactly happy about this. Sorry dude, I would like to have more chances for fusing down the line.

Anyways, we need to warp back to Capitan in order to find a carpenter to spruce up the place. After a quick battle outside to bump Rand up another level, I head inside, then choose the carpenter in the tree house as my main one. Other choices include the one in the house in the northeast next to the dragon statue or the one just to the left of the tree house dude.

Now keep in mind if you didn't save all the villagers in the well, your options will be fewer for whom you can choose.

Anyways, with that out of the way, it's time to advance the story next time.
